Summer swing

We are into the swing of summer and have been enjoying the later evenings, lazier mornings, and unscheduled fun,  Here's the latest Hoots family update.

Brady: Baseball season finally ended last week at a tournament in Wilson, NC.  Brady ended his regular season by winning the league championship, then winning the "Mayor's Cup" by defeating the winner of another Durham league.  But we didn't end there, and All-Stars would proceed to fill the schedule every single night for the next three weeks.  Brady was a solid lefty shortstop and he loved playing on the "Green team" and the increased intensity that came with All-Stars.

Brady had another sports first this year as he was finally able to attend Roy Williams Basketball Camp.  His dorm roommate was his dad, though his dad wasn't around much, and that was sure fine with Brady.  We loved the independence, the friends, the basketball, the cafeteria meals, and the late bedtimes.  He may have been the smallest and the youngest kid out there, but what he lacks in size he makes up in confidence.

Jackson: Baseball season ended earlier for Jackson, and required much less time than Brady's, but Jackson is as big of a baseballer as his brother.  They boys received catcher's gear for their birthday, and on a daily basis, Jackson straps it on so Brady "can throw it at me as hard as he can."  Our backyard has been transformed as a baseball diamond, cleverly named "Hoots Field" and the boys can often be found outside, sweeping home plate, and organizing the dugout.  Jackson was drug to Wilson to watch Brady's baseball tournament and over three days, he watched six games and spent at least 16 hours at the field without one complaint.  He is the perfect younger sibling who not only tolerates the long nature of baseball, but seems to really enjoy it.

At his kindergarten graduation, his teacher announced his favorite food, and what he'd like to be when he grows up.  A ham sandwich and a pitcher. Easy to please, my sweet midedle child.

Avery: While the boys are outside playing baseball for hours at a time, Avery is generally inside with me.  My little shadow keeps me on my toes and when she's not making me laugh, she's making me miss preschool.  She loooooves makeup and doesn't leave home without her makeup bag.  Makeup at the baseball game, makeup at the grocery store, makeup at the car wash, makeup everywhere.  Thankfully, its more the process and concept she enjoys, rather than any true transformation, so whether she's doing her own, or others, subtlety is key.

In girly fashion, Avery also loves dresses and skirts.  Yesterday, I got a pair of shorts on her for the first time in months.  She had wanted to wear a new pair of tennis shoes, and I told her yes...if she wore shorts.  I'm not above bribery to get her to expand her clothing horizons.  But she's feisty and full of personality and while I often wish for someone to take her off my hands, I'll inevitably miss her as soon as someone does.

Eric:  On Wednesday, he celebrated the best day of the year.  The end of camp!  Its always a celebration and a relief that he doesn't need to deal with it for another 350 days or so.  Right before camp started, he gave a high school commencement speech for his alma mater.  The kids and I only heard the speech given in our living room, but from all accounts, he "crushed it."  He started writing it a whole week before it was given, which clued me in that he was taking it seriously.  I was married to him through graduate school when he wouldn't even think about beginning a paper until at least 10pm the night before.  My anxiety was much higher than his, apparently.

Me: I'm enjoying the increased time with my kids over the summer break, while missing my quiet moments in my office painting.  Its been a little tougher carving out time, but with every passing year, I can manage to sneak away for longer periods of time while they play amongst themselves.  It may not be quiet, but if they're occupied, everyone wins.  I taught a string and nail art class to about 25 people about a month back.  It sort of fell into my lap, and was a fun alternative to my usual work.

Eric and I celebrated 10 years of wedded bliss. What better way to celebrate than a kid free trip to the Cayman Islands!

We are excited about July, the emptiest month for us as far as items on the calender.  We'll do lots of lake days, and pool days, fun days, and probably some boring days mixed in!
