Oregon trail

7:33 am: The adventure has begun! We are 45 minutes in on the first leg of our journey to Portland, Oregon. It feels like my brother picked the furthest spot possible away from us to live, although, to be fair, he lived on the west coast before I moved to the east coast.  My parents, along with my other brother and his family, will be traveling to Portland as well, so it'll be a fun family circus. We just have to get there.

The good news is our first leg is a quick one. 5+ hours to San Francisco, then another couple to Portland. My philosophy on taking a 6:30 am flight is paying off right now. Jackson's 4:30 wake up call means this is my current view.

Brady woke up surprisingly chipper and the first thing he said to me was "Mommy, you were telling the truth."  (Is that abnormal?). I had told him last night that we would be waking him up when it was still dark outside and I am a woman true to my word.

Brady and Jackson elicited laughs on what would otherwise have been a boring 10 minute shuttle ride from the parking lot to the airport and we were all TSA pre-checked, so we breezed by the very long security line. Eric is sleeping, Brady is watching a movie, which is all to say, things are going well....so far. Oh, and it's our 6th year anniversary today.  Happy anniversary, honey.

10:44 am: After 4 hours of listening to Jackson say, "Tummy hurt," he has finally taken care of the problem.  Smelling his dirty diaper in a well-ventilated room is painful enough, but changing him in a 3 square foot room gives your nose something to run from.

The good news is that we are over halfway through our first leg and none of the passengers hate us yet (the exception of the person that went after Jackson and me in the the bathroom).

I have a small beef with the flight attendant. When she asked if we wanted anything to drink, I asked if she'd be able to put some water in the bottle I already had (because full cups, a moving vehicle, and toddlers don't always mix) and she said she couldn't. Which is fine, but citing "supply and demand" as her reason I found a bit ridiculous. 1) I think your supply should match demand and not vice versa. I paid $2000 for my family to fly so I think I'm entitled to this position 2) I just saw you hand a full can of sparkling water to a lady 3) Three hours in and you've already done three beverages services. If you filled me up the first time, I would no longer need your services.   So instead, I asked for 3 cups of water for our family and one cup of ice and poured these all into my bottle. And then I did it the next time you came around. Thanks United, the environment hates you.

11:01 am:  Jackson's "tummy hurts" again.  And Eric is asleep, again. I don't feel bad now about the anniversary present I didn't buy.

11:13 am: I am a human pillow.

12:35 am:  San Francisco airport is impressive, though I don't wish to extend our stay. Is it a wonder that kids think every screen is a touch screen?

1:47 am: Flight #2 is about to take off. Brady is using the $1 magnetic checker board as a basketball court. The game pieces are, of course, players, and we are about to tip off. Brady is sitting next to a girl (looks about 20), who plays for USA soccer. I just witnessed her taking a few covert selfies, which weren't as covert as she thought.

2:16 pm: Still in on the ground but for real about to take off.  I'm going to give selfie-girl a pass because it turns out she's only 14 and let Brady practice his knock-knock joke on her. Brady told me "don't look at me" and when I turned away, he asked her what her name was. It was more of an embarrassed mumble, but I got a nice glimpse into the future.

3:06 pm: Its been a long day. All the Hoots boys are sleeping.

7:08 pm: We've been at the Howe household for a few hours and have seen Brady and Emma (age 5) for a small fraction of that time.  Last time Eric went to check on them, they were playing family and asked him to leave. Jackson and Reese (age 2.5) were playing quietly when I went to check on them. I thought it was such a cute moment, so I took a video. It took me a while to figure out what they were doing. Or rather, what Reese was doing to Jackson.  Not that he was too upset about it.  Looks like bath night.

10:25 pm: Turns out the marker Reese selected was not super washable.

10:42 pm:   18 hours of waking up, Jackson is asleep within 30 seconds of being put down.  Its 7:42 local time, which is why Brady is having such a difficult time going to sleep.  That, and the fact that is his new BFF is lying 18 inches away from him.  He can't figure out why we want him to go to bed while its still light outside.  Explain time zones to a 4-year-old.

My bedtime has yet to be determined, but it will be soon and I will sleep well!
