14 things I'm thankful for in '14:
1) Naps: This really should be #1 and #2. #1 being naps for myself which are only possible if #2 (naps for children occur). And right now, when the stars align, they both happen at the same time of day. Its what keeps me alive.
2) Mom friends: I've been blessed to be surrounded by an amazing group of women. Mom wars, mommy-shaming, competitive parenting -- Facebook is full of articles lamenting the pervasiveness of these things and frankly, I just don't feel it. I guess my friends are just cooler than most.
3) My husband: Life is more fun when he is around.
4) My unpaid job: I've read articles and heard of people (jokingly...I hope?) talk about how stay-at-home moms should get paid for their work. Ridiculous on the practical level, of course, but also, it strips away its meaning. I'm not staying home because its a financially sound decision (I wouldn't have had kids if I based all decisions on that), but because its was important enough to sacrifice to make that happen. And luckily because of #3, this is all possible.
5) Ebooks: I discovered ebooks at the library and my life changed. I read books on my phone, which means I read much more these days. Waiting in the preschool line at school? No problem! Can't sleep because Jackson is trying to tear out my hair? Grab my "book!" An example of the strength of my nerdiness: you're only allowed to put 5 ebooks on "hold" at the library and sometimes there is a long waiting period. So, I took out another library card in Brady's name so that at any given time, I can have 10 books on hold. But you can only check them out for 2 weeks so it takes some special juggling powers to make sure too many books don't become available at once. This is my life.
6) Snugglers: The cheesiest item on the list but I have two great snugglers and there is nothing that soothes my soul more. By the way, autocorrect kept wanting to change snugglers to smugglers which really would change the meaning a good deal.
7) Warm showers: it only takes one cold one to be thankful for this one.
8) Brothers: not my own, though I guess we'll throw them in while we're discussing this, but my boys whose get closer each day. And who get closer to the next ER visit each day.
9) iPhones: it's allowed me to write part of this post while at a Charlotte Hornets game "date night." When you're married to my husband, that's what you expect. My mantra: enjoy dinner, tolerate game. And see #5.
10) Tar Heels basketball: contrary to the game referenced in #9, I love watching a team that I care about. And of course, bringing the boys to the games brings on a new level of
11) Financial peace: I'd certainly not turn any away if handed to me, but when bills are always paid and money isn't a constant worry, life can be lived (and I'm only mildly angry when the installation of Eric's basketball hoop causes $400+ in plumbing bills).
12) Grandparents! They're the best, and its especially nice having two that are so close and more importantly, willing and able to watch our kids when we are gone.
13) Sushi: I don't eat it that often, but man, whenever I do, it tastes really good.
14) Jesus: The reason for the season! Sure, this should be #1 (right above naps), but I'll save the best for last. It's only through him that 1-13 are possible and for that, I am the most thankful of all.
